Why are tapered roller bearings used in pairs?

Tapered Roller Bearings

Tapered roller bearings contain an inner ring, outer ring and multiple tapered rollers. Individually, the inner and outer rings of the bearing are also tapered, similar to a tapered section. Due to the large contact area, tapered roller bearings are able to carry heavy axial and radial loads.

Tapered Roller Bearings

Compared to other types of roller bearings, tapered roller bearings have unique design characteristics. The rollers themselves have two different sizes of end diameters, hence the name "tapered roller". The raceway in which the rollers run has an inclined surface corresponding to the taper of the rollers, which makes these rings resemble parts of a cone; the inner raceway is actually called a cone, while the outer raceway is called a cup. The rollers are separated by cages (also known as cages) that keep the rollers at a fixed distance, ensuring smooth rotation and uniform load distribution. The rollers themselves are actively aligned by the angular surfaces of the rollers, cone and outer race, so the cage is primarily used to evenly space the rollers and contain them in a unified assembly. The flange prevents the roller and cage assembly from leaving the bearing raceway at high speeds. In theory, if the tapered roller, taper and outer ring all satisfy the geometric cone, their vertices will intersect at the same point on the bearing spindle.

The bearing axis is where the projection lines of the raceways combine at a common location to improve rolling while reducing friction. The load capacity can be increased or decreased depending on the increased or decreased contact angle. The higher the angle, the greater the contact angle. They are often used in pairs to better handle radial loads and, in some heavy-duty applications, can be used in a single unit in a combination of two or four rows.

Tapered roller bearing applications

These types of bearings can be found in a variety of everyday applications, especially in automotive wheels. Although originally designed to actually be manufactured for wagon wheels to improve their performance in agriculture, they have since been widely used in the automotive industry. Usually used in pairs to withstand equal amounts of axial force in either direction, they have come a long way since the days of the wagon wheel. However, the concept still exists and thrives today. They can also be found in agricultural equipment, gearboxes and axles, engines and reducers, propellers, railroad axles, as well as in mining and construction.

Advantages

The purpose of the tapered roller bearing is to reduce friction and thus the heat that causes the former bearing design to fail. The tapered shape allows for uniform load transfer when rolling. This greatly reduces wear, which in turn increases durability, and is now widely used in drive shafts and rotary shafts almost worldwide. Because of the high durability of these bearings, these shafts can typically run maintenance-free for hundreds of thousands of miles. Because of their reliability, they also handle many heavy-duty operations.

Everything you should know about roller bearings

Roller bearings are crucial components in various machinery and equipment, serving the purpose of reducing friction and facilitating smooth rotational motion. This article addresses 10 common questions related to roller bearings, offering insightful answers to help you better understand their functionality and applications. 1. What Are Roller Bearings? Roller bearings are mechanical components designed to support radial and axial loads while allowing for smooth, low-friction rotation. They consist of cylindrical or  tapered roller bearings  arranged in a cage, which helps distribute the load evenly and reduce friction. Roller bearings are widely used in industries such as automotive, manufacturing, and aerospace due to their efficiency and durability. 2. How Do Roller Bearings Work? Roller bearings work by distributing the load over the rolling elements (rollers) rather than the entire surface, which reduces friction. When a load is applied, the rollers roll smoothly, minimizi...

Advantages of Deep Groove Ball Bearings

In the vast world of bearings,   deep groove ball bearings   stand out as versatile and indispensable components in various mechanical applications. These bearings, characterized by their deep raceway grooves, have earned their popularity for good reason. Let's explore the compelling reasons why deep groove ball bearings are a preferred choice in diverse industries. Versatility in Applications One of the primary advantages of deep groove ball bearings is their versatility. These bearings are suitable for a wide range of applications, from electric motors and automotive components to industrial machinery. Their ability to accommodate both radial and axial loads makes them highly adaptable in diverse operating conditions. Efficient Radial Load Support Deep groove ball bearings are specifically designed to handle radial loads effectively. The deep raceway grooves distribute the load evenly, providing optimal support for applications with primarily radial forces. This chara...

How to Extend the Service Life of the Automobile Bearings?

As a  automobile bearings supplier , I'd like to share it with you. Bearings play a important role in the free and unrestricted movement of mechanical parts or components. Bearings bear the weight of the load and make things move without any or with much less friction. In a world without bearings, mechanically moving parts will malfunction and stick, preventing smooth operation. The life of a bearing is affected by the type of bearing, the load they carry, and good maintenance. If properly maintained, bearing life can be extended.   How to Use and Maintain Automobile Bearings Appropriate?   Tapered Roller Bearing   1. The vehicle should work within the rated load range. If the vehicle is seriously overloaded, it will directly cause the bearing to overload, which will cause the bearing to fail early, and more seriously, it will cause vehicle failure and personal safety accidents; 2. It is forbidden for the bearing to be subjected to abnormal impact load; 3. Regul...
